Epilepsy: What to do in case of a seizure

According to Wikipedia, Epilepsy is a group of neurological disorders characterized by epileptic seizures Epileptic seizures are episodes that can vary from brief and nearly undetectable to long periods of vigorous shaking. These episodes can result in physical injuries including occasionally broken bones and even death.
This is a condition that has brought a lot of stigma to those afflicted. There is a lot of misinformation about epilepsy and so many people think it is a mental disease. Some think it is a demonic possession thing.People assume that if you have epilepsy your neurological abilities are slow or delayed.Others assume that having epilepsy means you are a violent person.
People rarely want to associate with anyone who is suffering from this condition. Most psychologists have argued that the stigma is sometimes worse than epilepsy itself and it leads to depression, low esteem, and anxiety. It is important to note that epilepsy is not contagious and always try to help them when they have a seizure.Don't run instead help make sure the person doesn't hurt themselves during that episode

Epilepsy seizure is not meant to be harmful, the problem is where you are during the seizure fit. Here is what to do when you find yourself in this situation.

  • Roll them over to the side, it helps
  • Loosen clothing around the person's neck.
  • Do not try to hold the person down or restrain them. This can result in injury.
  • Do not insert any objects in the person's mouth. This can also cause injury.
  • Reassure concerned bystanders who may be upset and ask them to give the person room.
  • Remove sharp objects (glasses, furniture, and other objects) from around the person to prevent injury.
  • After the seizure, it is helpful to lay the person on their side to maintain an open airway and prevent the person from inhaling any secretions.
  • After a seizure, the person may be confused and should not be left alone.
It is good to be your brother's keeper and be compassionate enough to help save someone's life.
