Depression is not just feeling blue

No one really talks about this especially here in Africa. Most people think that is something you see in American crime shows or something a group of therapist came up with so they can have a job.
The truth is so many young people in this country are suffering from depression.Half of them don't even know that they are going through it. They don't fully understand what is happening to them.
Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. It affects how you feel, think and behave and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems. You may have trouble doing usual day-to-day activities, and sometimes you may feel as if life isn't worth living.
More than just a bout of the blues, depression isn't a weakness and you can't simply "snap out" of it.
It is hard to tell what really causes depression , doctors have been able to mention just a few such as inherited traits, biological difference ,hormones ,certain medication and brain chemistry.
Most of the time depression is triggered by traumatic experiences/events in life . Events such as the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, or the end of a relationship are often negative and traumatic and cause great stress for many people. It is hard to deal with these events especially when we lack support when going through them.

Depression is a serious disorder that can take a terrible toll on individuals and families. It often gets worse if it isn't treated. Untreated depression can result in emotional, behavioral and health problems that affect every area of your life.
